East China University of Science and Technology was formerly known as East China Institute of Chemical Technology. Its history can be traced back to Nanyang College and Aurora College over 100 years ago. It was founded in 1952 by Jiaotong University (Shanghai), Aurora University (Shanghai), Datong University (Shanghai), and Soochow University. The Department of Chemical Engineering of University (Suzhou), Jiangnan University (Wuxi) and other schools merged to form the first higher education institution in New China that is famous for its chemical characteristics. In 1956, it was designated as one of the first universities in the country to recruit graduate students. Since 1960, it has been designated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1996, it entered the national “211 Project” key construction ranks. In 1997, Shanghai participated in the co-construction and co-management. In 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a graduate school. In 2008, it was approved to build the “985 Innovation Platform”. One of 22 universities reformed. After more than half a century of reform and construction, it has now developed into a national key research university with distinctive characteristics and coordinated development of multiple disciplines.

The school has three parts: Xuhui campus, Fengxian campus and Jinshan Science and Technology Park. It covers an area of more than 1.76 million square meters. The total area of various buildings is more than 816,000 square meters. There are a number of standard sports facilities. The library has a total library volume of more than 2.76 million. The company started to use two SRC-10SA (flow rate 1.0m³/min, pressure 0.8MPa, voltage 380V) air compressors from Shanghai Schneider Sunshine in 2011, which are mainly used for the clean air source of the university's laboratory.
